RUNTOWN, MOVES HIGHER.
NOLLYWOOD SHOULD LEARN FROM THE SPORADIC GROWTH OF NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY
RUNNTOWN |
Few years back, we hardly see Nigerians zealously go in
search of the HIP HOP music dropped by our local music artistes. Then most
Nigerians preferred listening to western music from 50 Cent, Eminem and so on.
There was a cabal of local artistes who their music were patronized.
Suddenly, there was sporadic growth in the way Nigerians
home and abroad began appreciating music, dropped by our local Hip Hop artistes,
and moreover, Nigerian music began to draw global attention. Now let’s ask
ourselves: what was behind the sudden global sporadic growth of Nigerian Music
industry? Let’s move along as we analyze and answer the question.
First, it is a fact that variety is the spice of life. At
the point when western hip hop music flourished more than its Nigerian
counterpart, we realize that variety was lacking in Nigerian Hip Hop music.
There was kind of a cabal of few hip hop local musicians, who at their individual
level sang the same trend of music. Variety was lacking! Talented musicians
weren’t entering the music industry massively to initiate change in the trend of
our local music. Then we preferred western music, where variety loomed.
At a point, Nigga raw came up with a unique style of music;
it drew a lot of attention in our local Hip HOP music. Some musicians followed
the trend of Nigga Raw’s music (modified) and it drew more attention. All of a
sudden there was a massive outbreak of upcoming musicians entering into the
music industry with different style of music as their individual talents call.
Now what happened? There was an outbreak of variety of different trends of
Nigerian Hip Hop music. It drew global attention, increased the pay in the
music industry. And till date the Nigerian Music industry is at the high rate
of global growth (in quality and quantity) owing to the fact that more upcoming
artistes are still coming into the industry with unique style of music.

Now, it is clear that
any upcoming talented music artiste, with unique style of music, well promoted
will successfully find his way in the music industry and become rated as a “star”.
It calls for a good unique music and good promotion!
Furthermore, there is some level of communal life in the
music industry which accounts for its growth. We find the so called “Stars in
the industry” featuring the “good” upcoming artistes and some of them signing
these artistes to blend them and aid them get promoted on win-win agreements. I
encourage more of such people/industries to rise as there are still millions of
upcoming talented musicians in Nigerian in desperate need of signing a win-win
agreement that will aid blend them and get them promoted.
In general, what I am saying is that “good” and “well
promoted” music in Nigerian breaks its way in, regardless of the artiste who
dropped it. Breaking through in the music industry might take time, but hard
work, patience and consistency assures victory.
Today, the Eagles vision power productions appreciate and
promote RUNTOWN as the best musician
in the current trend of Hip Hop music. His newly released video “From Lagos to
Kampala” is a real boost to the Nigerian music industry. We project him as the
best so far and still expect the best from him.
Now, let’s look at the Nigerian movie industry. No doubt
this part of Nigerian entertainment industry is falling out, out of greed, lack
of proper initiative and lack of variety! Most Nollywood stories are monotonous
when closely studied; they lack good stories and good cinematography.
Close study detects that the rising generation in this
country no longer appreciate most of Nollywood movies. They prefer going to the
cinema to watch “good movies” which are well filmed. They prefer watching well produced movies not their "fans" who feature in the movies. They prefer watching
western movies. The old way is dying! Though frustrated by the old hands in the
industry, young producers with great initiative are going into Nollywood to create changes. There are
millions of upcoming producers and artistes; they should be supported in this
new era! Let there be growth and let the old ways fizzle away so that Nollywood
will achieve sporadic growth like the Nigerian contemporary music industry.
